Why won’t the UK regulate funding for IVF?

Nov 4, 2015

We’re halfway through this year’s National Fertility Awareness Week and the discussion about IVF funding rumbles on in the press.  The more experts I speak to for this podcast,  those working directly within the infertility world, the more apparent it is that there is such disagreement and disbelief to the funding cuts that are happening in CCGs around the UK.  James O Brien on LBC was discussing it. Having been through IVF treatment himself he asked people to convince him that the cuts are valid. I couldn’t help tweet the point that the cost of depression from those unable to have children surely would cost the NHS more… a fact I have discussed previously with Susan Seenan, my guest on this episode.

Susan Seenan CEO Infertility Network UK

Susan Seenan CEO Infertility Network the UK

About my guest:

Susan who has spent the last few days talking about this on local BBC radio is CEO of INUK as well as co-chair for Fertility Fairness as she has spoken about the frustration she feels regarding the manner in which the CCGs operate and that they just don’t really understand how much they should be paying!!

How insane is that? Why can’t we just sit them down and bang their heads together? The last time Susan and I spoke it was in Season 1 we talked about the postcode lottery, do make sure you have a listen to that episode also

What you will learn in this podcast:

  • How the UK’s funding for fertility treatment differs to Scotland, Ireland, and Wales
  • How CCG’s don’t know how much they should be
  • Some CCG’s are paying more for a cycle of NHS than an individual might pay privately
